The newly sworn-in chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has assured Nigerians that the elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states will be free and fair stating only the choice of the people will emerge.
The INCE boss made this commitment known during the inaugural meeting of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Electoral Matters and Political Affairs on Wednesday, November 18.
Yakubu said: “If we get our voting process right, we will definitely solve some of our major problems. Our developmental problem and others.
“INEC is ready for Kogi and Bayelsa elections, whatever the people decide, that is what we are committed to.”
He promised to match and surpass the achievements recorded by his predecessor, Professor Attahiru Jega assuring to build on the successes of 2015 elections.
The boss of the electoral umpire added that 48,000 more people have been registered with their permanent voter cards (PVCS) ready and distributed, Leadership reports.
The INEC chief told lawmakers that all sensitive materials for the November 21, election in Kogi state have been deposited with the CBN and distribution has begun.
He disclosed that the military would not be deployed but other security agencies will work in unison to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for the election.
Speaking earlier, the chairperson of the committee, Aishatu Jibril Dukku noted that despite the successes recorded in the 2015 general elections the exercise was still marred with violence.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Kogi state had condemned the national leader of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over a statement credited to him that Governor Idris Wada is a goner less than 48 hours to the crucial gubernatorial poll in the state.
